How To Get Emergency Food Stamps in Texas

If you are a resident of Texas and you want to apply for food stamp, you will notice that it takes more than 21 days for Texas Health and Human Services Commission (HHSC) to process your application for Special Nutrition Assistance Program (SNAP) benefits, which is also known as food stamps. But in the case whereby you need immediate assistance, you may qualify for to get Emergency Food Stamps in Texas and receive benefits the next day after you file your application.

How Can I Qualify For Emergency Food Stamps in Texas

When reviewing an application for SNAP benefits, Texas HHSC looks into your household income and expenses details. Let’s say you are living with other people, share food expenses and prepare meals together, you are considered a “household.”

In order for you to qualify for Emergency Food Stamps or Expedited Food Stamps in Texas, it is required that you or your household must meet one of the following criteria:

  • All household members are seasonal or migrant workers and are destitute with less than $100 in funds.
  • The household has less than $100 in funds and its monthly gross income is under $150.
  • The monthly household income and cash are less than the household’s monthly housing expenses.

How To Apply For Emergency Food Stamps

It is required that you must fill out and submit an online application by visiting www.YourTexasBenefits.com, in order to receive benefits. However, you can as well print out an application from the YourTexasBenefits.com and then fax, mail or submit the completed application to your local HHSC office.

Should in case you fax or mail the application, kindly send a copy of your government-issued ID. If you visit the HHSC to deliver the application in person, bring your ID with you.

You don’t need to provide any documentation of your income or finances when you applying for expedited benefits, unlike the regular SNAP application process. But when you later apply for the regular benefit program, HHSC may request your financial situation document, immigration status or housing situation.

Once you submit your application, you will be contacted to arrange an interview, which will require you to come to the benefits office in order to review your application and answer your questions. But you can also request a phone interview.

After the interview, if qualify for expedited benefits, right there, you will be issued a Lone Star Card which is an electronic benefits transfer card you can use to purchase groceries. But if you were interviewed on phone, and you qualify, you have to visit your local HHSC office to pick your card or you can as well request the HHSC to send your card in the mail.
